About Rubén Banol

Rubén is originally from Cali, Colombia, and nationalised Spanish, is a 38-year-old freelance video maker now based in Basel, Switzerland.

He started his career as a ballet dancer at the age of 17 with the Compaña Colombiana de Ballet and later continued his dance journey in Europe, performing with companies like Europa Danse, Compañia Nacional de Danza and Ballet de la Generalitat Valenciana. He spent nine seasons with Ballett Basel, working on choreographies by famous artists such as Jiří Kylián, Ohad Naharin, Richard Wherlock, Ed Wubbe, Alexander Ekman, Johan Inger, Hofesh Shechter, SharonEyal, and others.

In the past decade, he shifted his focus to filmmaking, educating himself and exploring his creativity with a camera. Over the last five years, he has worked on various video projects, collaborating with notable clients like Kunstmuseum Basel, Kammerorchester Basel, Foundation Beyeler, and Theater Basel.

With two decades of experience in dance, Rubén brings a unique perspective to his filmmaking, emphasizing movement, space, aesthetics, composition, and musicality. His work has gained selections at multiple film festivals and was notably featured in the movie ≪SPAIN IN A DAY≫ by Isabel Coixet. Additionally, ≪SHAPING THE SPECTRUM≫ Short Film, one of his creations, was awarded at the FilmArte Festival in Berlin in 2022.
